The Whittington Hospital wasn’t the obvious destination for a Sunday walk, but that’s exactly where over 100 children aged 11 to 13 ended up last weekend – as part of a fundraising drive for Camp Simcha!

Three groups set off early from a NW London venue, embarking on the eight-mile sponsored walk that marks the culmination of a year-long Camp Simcha programme giving students a mix of fundraising and volunteering experiences. This year’s cohort was the largest the programme has ever seen.

Arriving at the Whittington, the children delivered gifts for the nurses and Camp Simcha’s Simi the Monkey teddies for the children on the wards. They also heard from Brenda, nurse in charge on the day.

One child summed it up: “It was a long walk, but it was amazing when we finished knowing we had raised so much money.  My legs might not agree tomorrow though!”

Camp Simcha’s Director of Fundraising Shoshana Copeland summarised: “Watching children rise to a challenge is always special but knowing they walked to the doors of a hospital where children we support are spending their days being treated makes it even more meaningful.”

Camp Simcha is the Jewish community’s charity for families coping with serious childhood illness – and through our hospital outreach programme, we bring balloons, cuddly monkeys and toys to seriously ill children of all faiths and none.
