MARLEY'S STORY

At just four months old Marley, now two, was diagnosed with Tay-Sachs disease, a rare, life-limiting genetic condition that affects the brain and spinal cord. His parents, Chloe and Danny, were in shock, mourning the future they had expected for their family. Camp Simcha came into their lives shortly after.

“When we first got the diagnosis, it was horrific, but we decided we were going to create memories,” says Chloe.

“Marley has been given to us for a reason so we decided to make the most of every moment – and Camp Simcha has really allowed us to do this.

“We have a wonderful Family Liaison Officer (FLO) Talia – who I immediately felt I could let my guard down with, someone who understood and cared. She spent time with our older son Hudson, now four, and organised family days out that created precious memories.

“When Marley needs to go into hospital, Talia organises transport as he is so vulnerable. When he got his feeding peg fitted, she arrived with food and essentials. In these moments you don’t think about yourself, but Camp Simcha do; they removed the stress out of everything.

“Last year, three weeks after the birth of our third child, Cooper, we attended Summer Retreat. As we arrived, Hudson was whisked off by his volunteer, Maya; he felt immediately comfortable with her and had the best time. Camp Simcha also arranged an experienced carer for Marley, so for the first time I could rest, knowing he was safe. Danny and I even got to sit down and have dinner together on our own!

“Being part of Camp Simcha has connected me with other mums – a community who understands the isolation and the constant juggling of caring for a seriously ill child. You’re in a bubble, fight mode – but through it all, the Camp Simcha family is always there with incredible energy, which is what we need.”

Marley’s family is one of hundreds we support. This Pesach please help us be there for every family who needs us.
